THE STRANGE GRIEF OF LEAVING A JOB YOU COMPLAINED ABOUT EVERY DAY

It is possible to complain about a workplace every day, leave it, and still miss the world you had there.

You complained daily. You meant most of it. You left, correctly, and then found yourself missing the canteen at an odd hour.

What you miss is rarely the work. It is the world the work built: the shorthand, the routes, the people who already knew the context.

Grief is an unreasonable word for it. It is also the only accurate one.

This one is deliberately unfinished. What did you miss that wasn't the work? The good lines get built into the longer piece.
